The Nepenthes Press is the imprint of Minneapolis-based book-artist Michael Waltz. Michael studied with one of America’s leading master binders, Jana Pullman, learning the traditional book binding practices of Europe and Japan. He continues to create fine handmade works that embrace both East and West. In 2002, his book designs for the independent publisher Sidecar Preservation Society earned him a short-list nomination for the prestigious World Fantasy Award. His recent projects include layout and design for Weird Shadows over Innsmouth, which was edited by Stephen Jones and published by Fedogan & Bremer.
Both the first two releases in the Nepenthes Press absinthe series have been nominated for the Minnesota Book Award.

La Fée Verte - Poetry of Madness.
Printed by the Nepenthes Press. Limited edition of 100 copies, signed and numbered.
£60

La Fée Verte - Poetry of Madness is the first of a series from the Nepenthes Press showcasing unpublished or hard-to-find literature from
the absinthe era. This first volume features absinthe-related poetry by Verlaine, Rimbaud, Charles Cross, Raoul Ponchon, Gustave Kahn,
Victor Hugo and August Strindberg (all in English translation), together with poetry by Marie Corelli, Ernest Dowson and Glen
MacDonough.
La Fée Verte - Poetry of Madness is a slim, 16 page, tall-octavo volume. It's elegance and exquisite Japanese-inspired binding perfectly
evoke the ambiance of the 1890's. It's a small and beautifully crafted work of art which will give immense pleasure to booklovers
everywhere, and of course especially to all devotees of the Green Fairy.
The book was set using 'Emigre' Mrs Eaves typefaces and letterpress printed on German rag-pulp paper, using a fifty-year-old
Vandercook proofing press. Each sheet of paper passed through this traditional, hand-operated press six times to achieve the desired
result. The decorative handmade Tairei end papers were specially imported from Japan, as was the authentic absinthe-colored Kyoto
book cloth. Each volume is hand-bound in a style unique to the artist.
The edition is limited to 100 copies individually numbered and signed by Michael Waltz, and 10 not-for-sale artists proofs, lettered A to J.
La Fée Verte - Poetry of Madness is exclusively available from the Virtual Absinthe Museum, and is priced at £60.

Eulogy for the very precious liquor Absinthe by Ernest Tisserand is the
second of a series from the Nepenthes Press showcasing unpublished
or hard-to-find literature from the absinthe era. The period immediately
after the ban on absinthe were characterised by the beginnings of
clandestine distillation and increasing nostalgia for the Green Fairy.
Ernest Tisserand's 1922 "Éloge de la très précieuse liqueur d’Absinthe",
a wonderfully elegiac memoir of the absinthe era that contains one of the
very few contemporary references to the use of an absinthe fountain, and
the first reference to home-distilled absinthe in the post-ban period. This
is the first published English translation.
Eulogy for the very precious liquor Absinthe is a slim, 8 page booklet. Its
exquisite Japanese-inspired binding perfectly evokes the absinthe-
soaked ambiance of the 1890's, while the wonderful William Morris
designed typeface and ornate border is typical of the Art and Crafts
movement of the same era. It is available in both a hard cover version (to
match the previous volume in the series, shown below), and also in a
stitched card cover version.
The hard cover copies of the book are printed on Zerkall Frankfurt and
the stitched copies are printed on Zerkall Book. The end papers for
both editions are French hand-marbled paper. The covers are made
from a heavy weight Japanese card that has a matching texture to that of
the book cloth
The edition is limited to 100 copies (30 hard bound, and 70 soft bound)
individually numbered and signed by Michael Waltz, and 10 not-for-sale
artists proofs, lettered A to J.
