The Virtual Absinthe Museum Source Disk
Six critically important - and otherwise unobtainable - original 19th century French absinthe texts on one CDROM, including
first and foremost, a complete set of scans of
Edmond Couleru's seminal "Au Pays de l'Absinthe", the most important
book ever written on absinthe and the basis of all modern absinthe histories.

If you're seriously interested in absinthe history, absinthiana, or distilling techniques, this is an absolutely unmissable disk.

None of the texts included on the disk are available elsewhere on this site, or anywhere else.

The disk contains COMPLETE SCANNED VERSIONS of the first four books - Couleru's Au Pays de l' Absinthe, Legrain's
Absinthe et Absinthisme, the 1906 Appel adressé au bon sens et à la raison du peuple Suisse and the 1905 Pernod
Fils Centenary Catalogue. The scans from the 1899 Duplais and the 1926 Fritsch distilling guides specifically focus on
sections NOT included in the PDF versions available elsewhere on this site.

The originals of these books are extremely rare and for all practical purposes unobtainable. Were they to come up
for sale, they would cost in total several thousands dollars to buy.

The Virtual Museum Source Disk, with the FULL SCANNED TEXT of four of the books and substantial extracts
from the other two, is priced at only £20 on CDROM.

Au Pays de l'Absinthe
By Edmond Couleru

Published in Montbeliard in 1908.

Written primarily to counteract the increasingly strident anti-absinthe
propaganda of the temperance movement, this is the most
authoritative contemporary resource on the history, production and
consumption of absinthe. Particularly interesting is the detailed
statistical information on absinthe consumption patterns, and the
growth of and expansion of the industry.

80 percent of what we know about absinthe history comes from
Couleru's book, and all modern authors list it as their primary
reference. It's the single volume that no-one interested in the history
of absinthe can afford to be without. The book has never been
reprinted and originals are extremely scarce, fetching  extraordinarily
high prices when they occasionally appear on auction.

The disk includes high resolution scans of the entire book, all 250
pages, and includes also all the illustrated plates, graphs and
tables.
Appel adressé au bon sens et à la raison du peuple Suisse par l'Union des
intéressés à la question de l'Absinthe au Val-de-Travers

Published in Fleurier in 1906.

An extremely scarce and fragile 78 page pamphlet - this is believed to be the only copy
in private hands.

Probably the most important pro-absinthe polemic extant, the booklet gives a
comprehensive rebuttal to the prohibitionists' arguments, and discusses the flaws in
the scientific evidence  against absinthe, the unfairness of blaming the Lanfray
murders on absinthe, and the probable economic costs of banning the liquor.

The disk includes high resolution scans of the complete booklet, 80 pages in total.
Absinthe et Absinthisme
By Dr Legrain

Published in Lausanne in 1903

A hugely influential anti-absinthe tract by one of the most effective prohibitionist
campaigners, and one of the architects of absinthe's downfall. The case against
absinthe set out with vigour and clarity.

The disk includes high resolution scans of the complete 24 page booklet.
Pernod Fils 1805 - 1905 Centenary Catalogue

The two promotional booklets produced by Pernod Fils in 1896 and
1905 are a primary source not jut for our knowledge of the company,
but gfor the production of absinthe in general. The text of the 1905
version included here is similar to the better known 1896 edition, but
the photographs are of particular interest, as they show the factory
and equipment
after the devastating fire in 1901 that destroyed most
of the original buildings.

The disk includes high resolution scans of all 31 pages.
Nouveau Traité de la Fabrication des Liqueurs d’Apres les Procedes les Plus Récents
By J.Fritsch

Published in Paris, 1891

Fritsch was the editorial secretary of the influential journal La Distillerie Français.
Together with Duplais's similarly titled work, this 550 page volume is one of the most
important guides to 19th century French distilling techniques. The pages devoted
specifically to absinthe are particularly comprehensive.

Although published after the 1915 ban, the 1926 edition of Fritsch's "Nouveau Traité"
included an eye-witness account of the absinthe oxygenation process at the Cusenier
factory.

The scanned extracts on the disk include over 30 pages NOT included in the PDF file
available elsewhere on this site.
Traité de la Fabrication des Liqueurs et de la Distillation des Alcools
By P.Duplais

7th Edition, entirely revised by Marcel Arpin & Ernest Portier, Paris 1899-1900

This authoratative and much quoted distillation guide went through seven editions from
1855 to 1900, with this, the final edition, being regarded as definitive.

This is our most accurate and comprehensive guide to the distilling techniques used by
late 19th century absinthe distillers, and is informally regarded as the "bible" of those
seeking to duplicate their recipes today.

The scanned extracts on the disk include over 40 pages NOT included in the PDF files
available elsewhere on this site.
